The Johnson City Cardinals were on the road Thursday night, but that didn’t keep their home stadium from buzzing with activity.

While the Cards were taking on the Bluefield Blue Jays, workers were putting the finishing touches on TVA Credit Union Ballpark.

Johnson City’s home opener is set for Friday at 7 p.m. when the Kingsport Mets come into town.

“It’s go time,” Cardinals General Manager Zac Clark said. “We’re locked in. The adrenaline has been building and everybody’s got butterflies. Everybody’s focused and excited.”

The Cardinals have set franchise attendance records the past two years. Last season, 65,202 fans came through the gates, and Clark’s goal is to have even more this season.

“I think we will,” he said. “Every year we do some new things and it kind of catches on with the community. Everybody wants to check it out and when they get in here they realize it’s a pretty cool place to be.”

With that in mind, the Cardinals have made some significant changes to the stadium.

New box seats have been installed and a second lounge area — this one is on the first-base side — has been added.

In addition, two giant ceiling fans have been installed in the grandstands to help circulate the air. Fans will also notice the new lights that have been installed on the playing field.

In the concourse area, the Kids Zone has been expanded and a new team store has been built.

“It’s here,” Clark said. “We’ve been working hard to get everything ready. If something comes up and Plan A doesn’t work, we just go to Plan B.”

Friday is magnetic schedule night. Saturday is Paul DeJong bobblehead night and local country band JB 5 n Dime will put on a performance in the concourse before the game.
