Voices of Chester brings history alive

Contributed • May 27, 2019 at 9:04 PM

The walls of the Chester Inn are talking in a couple of weeks with decades-old stories of people who worked and stayed there, and there are plenty of tales to go around.

Voices of the Chester will be an intimate performance experience that will take guests on a journey through the historic building’s long past. The Inn is the oldest commercial building in the state’s oldest town. Attendees can meet the people who once worked and stayed there, from past owners, to politicians, salesmen, enslaved workers, and bound children, because they all have a story to tell.

During the show, audience members will be led throughout the Inn, up and down stairs and into the restored rooms on the second and third floors. Along the way, they’ll encounter more than 10 stories from the Inn’s rich history. There is still a little secrecy on whom the audience will meet, so Heritage Alliance members hope people will get their tickets — which are already available — soon.

Performances will take place at 7 p.m. June 14, and at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 6 p.m., and 8 p.m. June 15th. Due to the intimate nature of the experience, only 20 tickets are available per performance Friday and Saturday.

A special performance of Voices of the Chester will be offered at the International Storytelling Center on June 16th at 1 p.m. The International Storytelling Center is handicap accessible. During this Sunday matinee, the stories of the Chester Inn will come to life onstage at the center’s theater, which seats 95 people.

Tickets for all performances are $8. Tickets are available from the Jonesborough Visitors Center or can be purchased online at jonesborough.com/tickets. For more information, call 423-753-9580.
