The Office offers a little something for everyone
Reach the Mystery Diner at diner@johnsoncitypress.com.
At a glance: The Office (located at Best Western), 2406 N. Roan St., 283-0050; Dinner hours are Monday-Saturday, 4-10 p.m., Sunday, 5-10 p.m.; breakfast buffet, happy hour and bar hours differ; credit cards accepted.
Restaurant-based hotels wear two hats. For one, they are the front-line access to food for overnight guests, which means the menu must appeal to all ages and wallet sizes. Obviously, that is a tall order. But they also strive to be competitive in the cut-throat restaurant market by going after the local resident clientele; yes, another tall order.
With The Office, located within Best Western on Roan Street, success is more likely with the former. Because of its diverse menu, The Office has options for guests in the mood for steak, wings, salad, pizza, sandwiches and pasta who don’t want to (or can’t) venture out in town. Convenient and somewhat cost-friendly are two pluses.
But for me, The Office likely will not be the first place I think of when considering dinner options. The food earned satisfactory marks, but I’ve yet to find an entrée that serves as a “boomerang.” I don’t doubt the fact that The Office has a base of loyal locals, but I imagine they are there for the other “hat” it wears — the sports lounge.
The lounge is in a separate area adjacent to the dining room. The dim lights keep the atmosphere very relaxed, creating an ideal setting for after-work drinks or postdinner cocktails. The service at the bar turned out to be more expedient that the restaurant.
Two appetizers merit recommendation. One is the Bacon Wrapped Stuffed Shrimp. Served with barbecue sauce, the shrimp is wrapped in bacon and filled with cheese. Bacon wrapped shrimp isn’t an easy find in Johnson City.
The other recommendable is the wings. Though I did manage to garner three spots on my off-white shirt, my wings had a respectable amount of meat, and the hot barbecue sauce was actually quite tolerable. My palate has seen hot.
You can get these as an appetizer, but I’ve also noticed that the restaurant has a wings bar with different flavors, as well as salad and tacos. If I do go back, that will be the area I explore.
The Office also promotes itself as a steakhouse, but given its Roan Street address with three other “official” steakhouses nearby, that is a bit bold. The sweet potato was slightly overcooked, but the Filet Mignon turned out to be better than OK. I asked for medium and the kitchen delivered it perfectly. The vegetable du jour had a nice distinct flavor. The 9-ounce filet exceeds the $20 price tag. Worth it? Perhaps. But in all fairness, it was the most expensive steak. The sirloin, ribeye and chop steaks were priced within reason.
Though not claiming Johnson City’s “Best of Best” award, the pizza at The Office was OK, especially considering you can get a 12-inch pizza for $8, and on Tuesday, I think it is a $5.99 special. It’s pizza the way it used to be with a thin crust, a mild marinara sauce and your basic toppings. Kids will enjoy it.
