James “Jim” Ramsey, age 79, of Erwin, passed away on Monday, March 24, 2014, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center CLC1.
He was a Unicoi County native and a son of the late Dennis and Viola Guinn Ramsey.
At the age of 15, Jim left home to work on the assembly line for Chrysler in Detroit. After a brief period in Detroit, he returned home to join the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Washington. Following his time in the military, he returned home again working various careers, and retiring as owner/operator of Weathertite Aluminum Company, of Erwin.
Mr. Ramsey was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he served as an usher and was a member of the Regular Fellows Sunday School Class. He loved his church dearly.
Jim loved to go camping and to travel, but above all he loved his son and grandchildren.
Other than his parents and a sister, Mary Lou Chandler, Jim is preceded in death by his wife, Janice Ramsey, in March 2013.
Jim leaves behind: Son: Denny Ramsey and wife, Joan, of Elizabethton; Grandchildren: Justin Ramsey, Chad Ford, Autumn Chandler and husband, Shane; Great Grandchildren: Chase and Tori Chandler; Brother: Jerry Ramsey and wife, Marie, of Unicoi; Nephews & Nieces: Stacy King Peake and husband, Stacy, and their sons, Zack and Matty; Tony King and wife, Susan; Jeff Chandler; Kathy Chandler; David Ramsey and Mallene Shelton; Mark Ramsey and wife, Michelle, and their children, Taylor, Chad, & Krista; Great Niece: Marissa Chandler; Great Nephew: Jason Chandler.
The family would like to express thanks to the wonderful staff at VA CLC1 who cared for Jim like family, Dr. Gary Bush, Dr. Holiday and PA Kathy Neal, as well as the Regular Fellows Sunday School Class for their friendships and visits.
A funeral service for James “Jim” Ramsey will be held Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at 8:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church, 540 Adams Street, Erwin, TN 37650. Reverend David Crutchfield and Reverend Bernie Jones will officiate. Musical selections will be provided by Larry Pate.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 6:00 PM until service time at Calvary Baptist Church.
A committal service will be held on Thursday, March 27, 2014, at 11:00 AM in the Mausoleum Chapel of Evergreen Cemetery. Those who will attend will meet at Valley Funeral Home on Thursday by 10:30 AM to go in procession to Evergreen Cemetery. Those serving as pallbearers are Justin Ramsey, Chad Ford, Jerry Ramsey, Mark Ramsey, David Ramsey and Tony King. In lieu of flowers, the family would like memorial donations be made to Calvary Baptist Church Building Fund, 540 Adams Street, Erwin, TN 37650.
