Samuel J. Messer, age 78, of Bluff City, went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, from Sycamore Shoals Hospital.
Mr. Messer was born in Harlan, Kentucky, but had lived most of his life in Bluff City, TN, and was a son of the late Perry and Elizabeth Gatliff Messer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Debra Star Godsey; and two brothers, George Messer and Maurice Lee Messer; and one sister, Eunice Randall.
Mr. Messer was a pipefitter and welder and a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was a member of Friendship Free Will Baptist Church, where he was a teacher and a song leader, and previously attended Green Mountain Free Will Baptist Church, where he had served as a Deacon and adult Sunday School Class teacher and a song leader. He loved reading History and was a devoted Christian.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Shirley Messer, of the home; two daughters, Scarlett Messer Murphy, Hampton, and Shelly Gross and husband, Jimmy, Bristol, TN; a son, Sam Messer Jr., Bluff City; six grandchildren; one great granddaughter; one great grandson; two brothers, Phillip Messer and wife, Martha, Hampton, and Carlos Messer and wife, Kay, San Antonio, TX; three sisters, Tona Barklue, Austin, TX, Joann Bishop and husband, Jim, Snider, TX, and Jeannie Funk and husband, Travis, Kingsport. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A celebration of life service for Mr. Messer will be conducted on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at 7:00 PM in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Danny Osborne and Rev. Danny Blevins officiating.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM-7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Saturday; or at the residence at anytime.
The graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Sunday, March 16, 2014, in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Carter County. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be Luke Godsey, Logan Godsey, Coleman Carrier, Ken Murphy, Jimmy Gross and Kenneth Murphy Sr. Honorary pallbearers will be Members of Green Mountain Free Will Baptist Church, Friendship Free Will Baptist Church, Dace Johnson, Jeff Harrin and Dr. Khan. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 1:50 PM on Sunday.
