Gene Clinton Ray was called home to rest on Saturday, March 8, 2014, at his residence. His life journey began on August 5, 1938, in Johnson City, TN.
His biological parents, the late Olivia Robinson and Landon Rhea, gave the honor of his upbringing to devoted mother, the late Bessie M. Rhea and her husband, Joe Rhea. In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his brother John Watson; and sister, Pauline Lewis.
He served in the U.S. Armed Forces at an early age. Gene later became a graduate of Langston High School. He was also a member of the Elks Club. Gene was employed at CSX Transportation for 24 years, retiring in 2003.
Gene leaves to cherish his memories his children: three sons, Ronald Ray, of Atlanta, GA, Tony Ray and Monty Machen, both of Johnson City, TN; three daughters, Linda Conley (J.W.), of Knoxville, TN, Alicia Saunders (Jerry), of Durham, NC, and Whitney Ray, of Johnson City, TN; brother, Samuel Watson, of Detroit, MI; uncle, Otis Robinson, of Johnson City, TN; sister-in-law, Juanita Watson, of Harrisburg, PA; special niece, Brenda Watson, of Johnson City, TN; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of loving friends and family.
The family of Gene C. Ray would like to extend our deepest gratitude and appreciation for all acts of kindness shown during our time of bereavement. Please continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, March 13, 2014, at the Birchette Mortuary Chapel Of Love, 219 E. Millard St., Johnson City, TN. Pastor Cora Lee Hamilton will Preside.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m. prior to the service.
Burial will be held at the VA National Cemetery in Johnson City following the service.
