James Walter Brinkley III, JOHNSON CITY

James Walter Brinkley III, age 75, of Johnson City, Tennessee, unexpectedly passed away early Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at his residence. A native of Shell Creek, Tennessee, Jim was the son of Virgie Julian Brinkley and the late James Walter Brinkley, Jr.
As an adolescent, he helped in his father’s general store and his grandfather’s apple orchard. During his college summers, Jim paid for his tuition by fighting forest fires for the United States Forest Service in California. He earned the degree of Bachelor of Science from East Tennessee State University. After graduating from college, Jim honorably served his country in the United States Army at the Giebelstadt, West Germany Air Defense Early Warning Radar Station.
Jim began his 45-year career as an Insurance Adjuster with General Adjustment Bureau, serving as branch manager for various branch offices in the South. Later, he established Brinkley Adjustment Co., Inc. and continued to be self-employed throughout his career. Jim’s additional professional endeavors included property investment and conflict resolution as a Rule 31 Mediator listed with the Tennessee Supreme Court.
Jim was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church. He was an active member of the Tri-Cities Claims Association as well as the Tennessee Claims Association serving as elected officers in both. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Johnson City in which he was named a Paul Harris Fellow. Jim served as an active board member of Lake Harbor Estates Homeowners Association.
In addition to his father, Jim was preceded in death by his father-in-law: Albert Britton Clark; and brother-in-law: A. Gene Clark.
Those left to cherish his memory are: his wife of 51 years, Brenda Sharon Clark Brinkley; sons: James Walter Brinkley IV, Timothy Clark Brinkley and his wife Dori Moses Brinkley; sister: Linda Brinkley Morgan and her husband John D. Morgan; mother-in-law: Norma Greene Clark; brothers and sisters-in-law: V. Ray Clark and his wife Kelly W. Clark; J. Keith Clark; and Jane I. Clark, widow of A. Gene Clark; Jim’s special cousin, Patsy Y. Crum and aunt-in-law, Marie G. Greene; Dori’s mother, Jacqeline Z. Moses; and his beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family requests the honor of your presence for a Memorial Service honoring Jim on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at 8:00 PM at Tetrick Funeral Services, Johnson City. The Reverand Michael Lester will be officiating the service. The family will greet guests to share memories from 5:30 PM until the service hour. A Graveside Service will be held on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at 11:30 AM at Mountain Home National Cemetery. The young men of Jim’s Family will serve as pallbearers. Everyone is asked to meet at the funeral home by 11:00 AM to go in procession to the cemetery.
