Buster Hughes, EWIN

Buster Hughes, 91, of Erwin, passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2013, at Appalachian Christian Village in Johnson City, TN.
Mr. Hughes was born on July 7, 1922, in Sioux, NC, a son of the late Finn and Maude Warrick Hughes. He was a blacksmith for the former Clinchfield Rail Road, and was a member and past deacon at First Christian Church in Erwin.
Mr. Hughes was a member of the Erwin Volunteer Fire Department and delivered for Meals on Wheels. He was also a member of the Clinchfield Senior Adult Center, the Rod and Gun Club, and worked with “Tiny” at the Watauga Historical Society. He loved fishing and bowling.
Mr. Hughes was a World War II veteran, having served in the United States Navy, and retiring from the Navy Reserve.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Eloise Hughes, on September 13, 2013; and brothers, Howard and Harry Dean Hughes.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory: Daughter: Denise Ray and her husband, Kenneth, of Johnson City; Son: Dennis Hughes and his wife, Joy, of Saltville, VA; Sisters: Nelle Wagner, of Erwin, Mary Louise Holt, of Bluff City; Sister-in-law: Evelyn Hughes, of Quincy, IL; Several nieces, nephews, Step Grandchildren, Step Great Grandchildren, Step Great Great Grandchild.
The family would like to extend their deep appreciation for his last year at Governor’s Bend Assisted Living.
The family requests the honor of your presence as we honor and remember the life of Buster Hughes in a graveside committal service at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, December 6, 2013, at Evergreen Cemetery with Dr. Todd Edmonson officiating. Military graveside honors will be rendered by the Unicoi County Air Force Jr. ROTC Honor Guard.
In Lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to: Watauga Historical Society, 119 Garland Cemetery Road, Elizabethton, TN 37643; Clinchfield Senior Adult Center, 220 Union St., Erwin, TN 37650; or Unicoi County Humane Society, 185 N. Industrial Dr., Erwin, TN 37650.
