Born in heaven (June 2, 1947) and dropped down in New Jersey, Roger Bailey (age 66) lived many places including Fredericksburg, Virginia, Ashland, Kentucky, and Johnson City, Tennessee, where he was privileged to enjoy his vocation as a musician.
Roger began his musical education at the Philadelphia Musical Academy (Philadelphia, PA, 1965-1966), followed by receiving a Bachelor of Music Education from Westminster Choir College (Princeton, NJ, 1966-1970). Roger went on to study at Temple University (1971-1974, 1978-1979), receiving a Master of Music in Choral Conducting, a Master of Music in Composition and worked toward a Doctorate in Musical Arts in Composition.
Teaching and performing music in many schools, colleges and churches, he also played with and led popular music ensembles for the enjoyment of many (The Sophisticates, East Tennessee Camerata). Most recently, Roger was the Director of Music at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Johnson City, TN. Roger also enjoyed success as an arranger and composer (“Journeying Toward Omega,” for All Saints’ Day).
Roger was joined in many musical activities by his loving wife and best friend, Carolynn Beier Bailey, since 1974. Together, their greatest contribution was in parenting Jennifer Lynn (Bailey) Patrick (1976) and Robert William Bailey (1979). Granddaughter Bailey Elizabeth Patrick (2004) was another wonderful blessing bestowed upon Roger. Carolynn and Roger also shared their lives with many canine and feline friends who enriched their lives immensely.
A Celebration of Life service for Roger will be held at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Johnson City, TN, on Sunday, December 8, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. Come with a joyful heart ready to share stories and raise your voices in song.
Roger leaves behind his loving wife of 39 years, Carolynn Bailey; daughter, Jenny Bailey Patrick; granddaughter, Bailey Patrick; son and daughter-in-law, Rob & Lesley Bailey; stepmother, Ruth Bailey (NJ); twelve cats; two dogs; and two granddogs.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Our Saviour Lutheran Church Pastor’s Discretionary Fund would be Roger’s wish.
Roger’s post mortem care and crematory services were provided lovingly by Birchette Mortuary, Inc. of Johnson City, TN., 219 E. Millard St. Johnson City, TN, 423-926-6013
