Mary J. Hughes, 84, 110 Lewis Lane, Erwin, died Saturday, November 16, 2013, at Appalachian Christian Village, Johnson City.
She was a native of Unicoi County and a daughter of the late Hiram and Carrie Miller Jones. During her working career, Mary had worked at Erwin’s former Southern Pottery as an Artist, painting pottery designs. After the closing of Southern Potteries, she was employed at the former Superior Hone, Corp.
Mary was a member of Ninth Street Baptist Church where she was a member of the Adult Choir and a Sunday School Teacher for 45 years. Mary loved to cook and bake then share her cooking and baked goods with friends and family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard W. Sneed and by her second husband, Howard F. Hughes; by five brothers: Orlanda Jones, Charles Jones, H.A. Jones, Clarence Jones and Infant Stephen Jones and by two sisters: Eva Hughes and Nora Dean Oaks.
Leaving behind to cherish her memories are: Son: Scott Sneed and wife, Carol, Decatur, Georgia; Two Sisters: Betty Adkins, Erwin, Melba Sneed, Adrian, Michigan; One Brother: John Jones and wife, Frances, Erwin.
The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence as we remember and honor the life Mary J. Hughes in a funeral service to be at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, November 19, 2013, in the Chapel of Valley Funeral Home. Rev. Rob Moor and Dr. Chris Ward will officiate. Vocal selections will be offered by Theresa Treadway.
Interment will follow at Bell Cemetery, Limestone Cove Community, Unicoi. Members of Ninth Street Baptist Church Choir will serve as Pallbearers. Visitation with the family will be at Valley Funeral Home on Tuesday from 11:30 A.M. until service time.
