Darrell Ledford Sr., BAKERSVILLE, N.C.

Darrell Roger Ledford Sr., of Bakersville, took flight from his earthly home Friday evening, November 15th, in the presence of his loving family and was accompanied by a band of angels to welcome him to his heavenly home.
He was the son of Jess and Donna Buchanan Ledford, of Bakersville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. Bruce R. Ledford.
He was a member of McKinney Cove Baptist Church in Bakersville.
He spent his entire professional life in service to the youth of Mitchell County. After graduation from Lincoln Memorial University, he taught biology, history and driver education in Mitchell County Schools. He was the last principal of Bowman High School and the first principal of the consolidated Mitchell High School. He also served as principal of Gouge Elementary. He served as Assistant Superintendent of Mitchell County Schools, supervising the department’s testing program.
Darrell was currently serving on the Board of Trustees of Mayland Community College, where he was chairman of the Academic Affairs Committee. He felt a strong commitment to his heritage and chose to spend all of his personal and professional life serving his community.
Early in his career he coached football and basketball at Bowman High School. His basketball teams won seven of eight Toe River Conference Championships and had a combined record 128 wins and 21 losses.
Darrell is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Elwanda McCoury Ledford; and son, Darrell Roger Ledford Jr. (Scooter), of Elizabethton, Tennessee; brothers, Dr. Ted R. Ledford and wife, Eleanor, of Little Switzerland, Lee Roy Ledford and wife, Sue, of Bakersville. He is also survived by a large extended family of sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces, and nephews. Darrell also leaves behind two special friends, Gin and J.C. Styles, of Burnsville, NC.
In addition to his professional life, he was an avid collector and was dedicated to his farm and farming. Darrell and Wanda, along with their family and friends, traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada exploring new places and sights.
Funeral services will be held in Bowman Middle School Auditorium on Sunday, November 17, 2013, at 7:45 PM with Rev. Todd Ayers, Rev. Larry Greene and Rev. Tim Fowler officiating.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 PM until the service time.
Interment will be Monday, November 18, 2013, at 11:00 AM at Wilson Memorial Cemetery on White Oak Rd., Bakersville, NC. Pallbearers will be J.C. Styles, Wade Holder, Tommy Ledford, Doug Dellinger, Dickie McCoury, Patrick Phillips, Brian McKinney, Dale Dellinger and Jess Ledford.
