James Courtney Shipley, age 78, 1884 Carroll Creek Road, Johnson City, went home to be with the Lord at 3:23 p.m. Thursday, October 10, 2013, at Johnson City Medical Center after a brief illness.
Mr. Shipley was a lifelong resident of Boones Creek, a son of the late John Henry and Rowena Burt Maupin Shipley.
He was a longtime dedicated steam plant operator for Holston Defense, retiring in 1991, and was an avid farmer.
Mr. Shipley was a lifelong member of Boones Creek Christian Church.
He was a loving and devoted husband, daddy, and was affectionately know as “papaw Jim” by his granddaughters.
Other than parents, Mr. Shipley was preceded in death by a son, James Michael Shipley, February 11, 2012; one brother, Johnny Shipley; and one sister, Sarah Almany.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Shirley Nolen Shipley; one son, Jeffrey C. Shipley and wife, Linda, Johnson City; one daughter, Kelly Shipley Cook and husband, Jeter F. Cook Jr.; three granddaughters: Madison Cook, Spencer Cook and Connor Cook, all of Gray; one step granddaughter, Jeanna Mathes; one step great-grandson, Lane Mathes; two brothers: Dan Shipley, Boones Creek, Bill Shipley, Knoxville; three sisters: Christine Feathers, Knoxville, Rowena Bowers and husband, Howard, Johnson City, Diana Gale Loyd, Jonesborough. Several nieces, nephews and many close friends also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. Shipley will be held Monday, October 14, 2013, from the Boones Creek Christian Church. Curtis Booher, Minister, will officiate. Active pallbearers will be John Wallace Feathers, Ronnie Feathers, Jonathan Shipley, Jeter Cook Jr., Robbie Boy, Dr. Steve Loyd and Rick Bowers.
The family will receive friends prior to the service between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Monday at the church and other times at the family home.
The committal service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 15, 2013, in Monte Vista Burial Park. Those attending are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:45 a.m.
