Published October 12th, 2013 9:40 pm

Dr. James Flugrath, age 79, died Thursday, October 10, 2013, as he wished, at home holding his wife’s hand. He was surrounded by those who loved him, especially his sister who helped raise him after his Mother died when he was nine.
He was a graduate of St. Joseph High School and proudly served in Special Weapons in the United States Army. He then graduated from the University of Michigan and remained a lifelong football fan. He received his Doctorate from Wayne State University Medical School. He served as Chief of the Audiology and Speech Pathology Department at the Mountain Home Veterans Hospital for over 20 years.
He served on the Board of the Red Cross and United Way and was a Paul Harris Fellow of the Tuesday Noon Johnson City Rotary Club. He enjoyed playing bridge, chess, poker and traveling.
As a Michigan Alumnus, he wanted to participate in their Project My Heart-Your Heart program which is as follows: “Each year, one to two million individuals worldwide die because of a lack of access to pacemakers. Meanwhile, almost 90% of individuals with pacemakers would donate their device to others in need if given the chance.” The University sends the family a release form and after signing it, everything else is taken care of. His pacemaker will go to someone in need just as an organ donation would. Information may be obtained from
In addition to his parents, Dr. Flugrath is preceded in death by a brother, William Robert Flugrath.

For those who wish, in lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra, PO Box 533, Johnson City, TN 37605; or a charity of your choice.
