Dr. Lois White Lowry, RN, MSN, DNSc, ANEF, of Nebo, NC passed peacefully the morning of September 19, 2013. Her family was gathered around her bedside and witnessed her inspired pathway home to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Lois was born August 2, 1932, to the late Paul Franklin White and Lois Anne White, of Drexel Hill, PA. She was a 1950 graduate of Upper Darby High School and attended Hood College, Frederick, MD. She earned her Bachelor of Nursing Science from Cornell University, New York, NY, Class of 1955. A lifelong scholar, she earned a Master’s of Nursing in 1977 from the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, and her Doctorate of Nursing Science from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, in 1987.
She is a former Chair and Dean of Nursing at Cecil Community College, North East, MD; Assistant Professor, Wright State University, Dayton, OH; Associate Professor and Associate Dean of the University of South Florida, Tampa, FL; and Professor (Emeritus) of East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, TN.
Lois was a Trustee of the Neuman Systems Model and a prolific author, educator and lecturer. She authored over 26 book chapters on nursing science education and contributed to numerous peer-reviewed journals. She has been the recipient of numerous Honors and Awards including membership in the prestigious Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and the acclaimed National League for Nursing.
An intrepid traveler, she has been a national and international speaker and consultant in nursing education for over a half century. At the time of her death, she was actively working on two book chapters and three peer-reviewed journal articles in her field.
Lois is survived by her beloved husband, the Rev. Dr. Robert L. Lowry, with whom she had celebrated 58 years of marriage; as well as five children and twelve grandchildren. She was the loving mother of Linda Anne Stunkard and husband, Geoffery, of Elizabethton, TN, Robert Paul Lowry and wife, Elisabeth, of Hollywood, FL, Dr. Jonathan Cardeen Lowry and wife, Catherine, of Morganton, NC, Debra Elizabeth Lowry-Hummel, of Palo Alto, CA, and David Rittenhouse Lowry and wife, Jennifer, of Hollywood, FL. She was the devoted grandmother of Laurel, John, Joel, Morgan, Daniel, Benjamin, Madison, Hans, Katharina, Lukas, Ethan and Jonathan.
Lois was a beloved and devoted nurse educator who believed in living Faithfully with deep Love for Family, Profession, Church and Community. She was an exemplary wife, mother and grandmother and a dedicated educator and mentor to thousands of nursing students and children.
She was a committed Christian and was actively serving as an ordained Elder of First Presbyterian Church of Morganton. A melodic Alto she was also an active member of the Church Choir, the Christian Education Committee and Primetimers. So many have been touched and blessed by her remarkable energy, warmth and compassion for others.
A celebration of Dr. Lois Lowry’s life and a memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Morganton on Saturday, October 5, at 1 PM. The family will receive friends and visitors in the fellowship hall following the service.
