Gary McWherter, JOHNSON CITY

Gary R. McWherter, 54, of the Central Community in Johnson City, Tennessee, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, September 19, 2013, from the Johnson City Medical Center.
Gary was a native of Greeneville, Tennessee, and the son of Mike Clark and the late Sally Haynes McWherter and the son of the late Ned McWherter and Sara McWherter. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Paul and Adelle Haynes.
Gary was a Lieutenant with the Tennessee Resource Wildlife Agency in District #42, with over twenty five years of service. He was a 1977 graduate of Greeneville High School, where he received a football scholarship, which he used to attend Lees-McRae College, where he graduated in 1979. Gary went on to graduate from the University of Tennessee in 1984, and returned to UT, to earn his Masters Degree in 1991.
Firstly, Gary loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ; he loved the outdoors, nature, football, picking his guitar, hunting and fishing. He was a Deacon at Sinking Creek Baptist Church and enjoyed teaching the Senior Member’s class, until his health no longer allowed him to do so.
Gary is survived by his wife, Kim Whitehead McWherter, of the home; his mother, Sara McWherter, Jonesborough, TN; a brother, Chris McWherter, Bluff City, TN; a step brother, David Dulaney and wife, Kim, Gray, TN; his special nephews, Dustin McWherter, who resides in Beirut, Lebanon, and Wesley Taylor, Johnson City, TN; his niece, Brooke Crockett, Johnson City, TN; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Alan and Robin Taylor, Johnson City, TN; and Jeremy Clark, who was like a son to him; and his beloved dog, “Sally.” Several cousins also survive.
A celebration of Gary’s life will be conducted at 6:00 PM on Saturday, September 21, 2013, in the Sinking Creek Baptist Church in Johnson City with Rev. Reece Harris and Rev. Keith Weatherly, officiating. A eulogy will be provided by John Barham.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 PM-6:00 PM in the church prior to the service on Saturday; or at the residence at anytime.
The graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 22, 2013, in the Captain Nelson Cemetery. Special honors will be accorded by TWRA Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be Chris McWherter, David Dulaney, John Barham, Steve Lane, Jeremy Clark, Todd Dabbs, Alan Taylor, Tim Sain, Bill Smith and Mark Pierce. Honorary pallbearers will be his TWRA family, his church family, friends on Ripshin Mountain, his McIntyre cousins, Bowie families, and the Greeneville High School Class of 1977. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1:00 PM on Sunday, to go in procession.
