Bruce Herrell, BAKERSVILLE, N.C.

Bruce Jesse Herrell, age 90, of the Harrell Hill community in Bakersville, passed away on Monday, September 9, 2013.
Bruce was born on September 10, 1922, at the family’s old homestead on Byrd Road in the Harrell Hill community of Mitchell County, NC. He was the son of the late Luther and Arizona Byrd Herrell.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Helen Bryant and Mildred Smith; and by his brother, A.D. Herrell.
He was a lifelong member of the Church of the Brethren. He served in the Alternative Services of the U.S. Army as a chaplain’s assistant at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas.
Bruce graduated from Tipton Hill High School and Appalachian State Teacher’s College. He taught history for thirty-five years, during which time he also coached girls’ basketball and ran a dairy farm.
Mr. Herrell is survived by his wife of sixty years, Betty Jo Herrell; his daughter, Sandy and husband, Mitch; his daughter, Betsy; his sisters, Edna Ham, Juanita Harbour and Carol Harrell; his grandchildren; Meg and Alex Robinson.
The funeral service for Mr. Bruce Herrell will be conducted on Friday, September 13, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. at the Pleasant Grove Church of the Brethren with Pastor John Smith officiating.
Interment will be in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery immediately following the service.
The family will receive friends Thursday, September 12, 2013, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Webb Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pleasant Grove Church of the Brethren or a charity of your choice.
