Sherry Smith Bowling, 67, of Elizabethton, Tennessee, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday September 10, 2013, from the Johnson City Medical Center following an extended illness.
She was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Crawford Alexander Smith Sr.
Mrs. Bowling graduated from Unaka High School, class of 1964, and was a graduate of ETSU in 1970. She retired from the Carter County School System after thirty eight years of service, having served at Unaka High School, Happy Valley Elementary, Range Elementary and Hunter Elementary; and was a former employee of the Elizabethton Electric System.
She was a member of South Side Free Will Baptist Church, and she enjoyed crafts, gardening and puzzles.
Survivors include her mother, Marilyn Wild Smith, Elizabethton; her husband of 41 years, Larry W. Bowling, of the home; a daughter, Heather Bowling Tester and husband, Eric, Elizabethton; a son, Kevin Bowling and wife, Ashley, Jonesborough; two granddaughters, Payton Tester, Elizabethton, and Paisley Bowling, Jonesborough; two sisters, Donna Smith Page and husband, Harry, and Vickie Smith, all of Elizabethton; two brothers, Crawford Smith Jr. and wife, Bobbi, Florida, and Edward Smith and wife, Sue, Kansas. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The celebration of life service for Mrs. Bowling will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Thursday, September 12, 2013, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Steve Burleson officiating.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel prior to the service on Thursday; or at the residence at anytime.
The graveside service will be conducted at 10:45 AM on Friday, September 13, 2013, in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Kevin Bowling, Eric Tester, Harry Page, Jason Peters, Danny Hawks Sr., Jody Crowe and Joel Oliver. Honorary pallbearers will be Brian Smith, Danny Hawks Jr., Matthew Wheeler and former teachers and students of the Carter County School System. Everyone will meet at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, at 9:30 AM on Friday to go in procession.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the doctors and staff of Hermitage Health Center for all the love and care shown to Mrs. Bowling during her illness.
