Cappitola Prater, JOHNSON CITY

Published August 14th, 2013 9:56 pm

On August 13, 2013 our precious mother, Cappitola King Prater, 96, went home to be with the Lord.
A native of Yancey County, North Carolina, she was born July 2, 1917, the daughter of the late Joe B. King Sr. and Rosalie Ledford King.
Mrs. Prater spent most of her life in Johnson City. She was a member of Oakland Avenue Baptist Church, but attended Keystone Free Will Baptist Church until her health failed. Keystone is where her heart was.
Mrs. Prater was a wonderful seamstress and continued to sew up to about a year ago. She worked selling shoes for years downtown and especially loved selling children’s shoes at Nettie Lee Boys and Girls Store.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Prater was preceded in death by two brothers, a sister, and her husband Arthur Prater in 1970.
Those left to cherish her memory include a daughter Rachel Gouge and husband Fred; a son Joseph T. Prater and wife Linda; a granddaughter Julie Carroll and husband Jeff; and a great-granddaughter Leah Carroll.
The family would like to extend a special Thank You to Dr. Cook and his associates for their loving care. Thank You to the 7500 Wing at Johnson City Medical Center for all the care you gave her. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be given to Keystone Free Will Baptist Church, 110 Bettie Street, Johnson City, TN 37601.
A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, August 16, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Roselawn Memorial Park, Johnson City with Reverend Bill Greer and Pastor Terry Jones officiating. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery at 1:50 PM.
Memories and condolences may be shared with the family and viewed online at or faxed to (423) 610-7177.
