James Carlton King 70, Entered into eternal rest on June 11, 2013, at The Calvary Hospital in Bronx, NY.
He was born on August 14, 1942, in Roanoke, Va. First son of Lucy King Fugate and Earnest King. He was known in Roanoke as “Sonny.”
The family moved to Bristol, Tn.. where he attended and graduated from Slater High School. After becoming a resident of Johnson City, TN, he attended and graduated from East Tennessee State University with a Bachelor;s degree in Business.
In 1968, he opened King’s Package Store. Mr. King joined friend Grady Ward to Co Manage The Original Drifters. In 1975, he opened The Eldorado Night Club. Later, he established Jamar Construction Company and built several buildings, houses and apartments in the area.
He was a member of Bethel Christian Church and a participant in several community and social activities, including The Proto Club. In the early ’80s, Mr. King and a close friend, Charles Yett, opened a K&Y Market. After being involved in several successful businesses he moved to Athens, Ga. While residing in Georgia, he received his Master’s degree in Business.
He was employed by long time friend, Grady Ward, and Co managed Ward’s Limousine Service. He was also employed by Gwinnett County Board of Commissions Water Resources Department and became manager until he retired in 2006. Due to health reasons he moved to Bronx, NY, to live with his oldest daughter, Audra, and family.
He was preceded in death by his father, Earnest King; Mother, Lucy King Fugate; and brother, Luther “Luke” King.
He leaves to mourn his daughters, Audra and her husband, Tony Mention, Rochelle Lee, Keva King; and a son, Craig Phillips; seven grandchildren, Jimisha Ryan, Stephon Mention, Trey Ryan, Keonna Jacobs, Caleb Lee, Savion Mention and Cienna Phillips; A special aunt, Mary Chapman; three uncles, John Smith, James Smith, and Bill Williams; Favorite nieces, Marcella King Jones, Kim King Gallop; and nephew, Luther King Jr.; and a Host of other nieces, nephews and friends; Two close friends, Charles Yett and Grady Ward.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday. June 22, 2013. at Bethel Christian Church, 107 Depot St.. Jonesborough, TN. with Pastor Vincent Dial officiating.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM prior to the services at the church and other times at the home of his daughter, Rochelle Lee, 400 S. Sycamore St., Apt B14, in Elizabethton, Tn.
