TRENT WOODS, N.C. — Lonnie Nelms, Jr., 85 of Trent Woods, “slipped the surly bonds of earth to touch the face of God,” June 8, 2012 at home.
He served his country in WWII, Korean Conflict and Vietnam. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, a long time member of New Bern Golf and Country Club where his fellow golfers nicknamed him “Shank.” He was also a member of The Locust Tree Hunting Club in Bullock, NC. He attended East Carolina University and graduated from Auburn University as a Civil Engineer. Lonnie retired from Cherry Point, and was the owner of Nelms Surveying. He was preceded in death by his son, Donald.
Lonnie is survived by his wife, Barbara Jo Shook, one son, George Nelms of LaJolla, CA; daughter, Lee Ann Element and husband Steve of Sneedville, MD; step-children, Greg Coulter of Virginia Beach; Chris Coulter and wife Elodie of Greenville, SC; his grandchildren, London Nelms, Wyatt Element and Sophie Coulter, Harper and Palynn Nelms, his best friend, Gerald Teal, several nieces and nephews and his loving best buddy “Munch-Kitty.”
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warriors 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300 Jacksonville, FL 32256.
Funeral services will be held at 5:00 pm Thursday, June 14, 2012 at Cotten Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial will be held at 1:00 pm Monday, June 18, 2012 at Mountain Home National Cemetery in Mountain Home, Tennessee.
