John Walter Graybeal Sr., age 84, 350 O’Brien Street, Erwin, passed away Sunday evening, May 27, 2012, at Johnson City Medical Center.
He was a native of Smyth County, Virginia, and had lived in Erwin since 1948. Mr. Graybeal was a son of the late Earl Walter and Bonnie Ethel Ashley Graybeal.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving two tours of duty as a medic during the Korean conflict. Mr. Graybeal retired from the U. S. Forest Service. He was of the Church of God faith.
Other than his parents, Mr. Graybeal was preceded in death by a son, Darrin Jason Graybeal, in 2005; his first wife, Gladys Hampton Graybeal, in 1985; and two sisters: Ora Mae Gambrell and Frances Buckles.
Survivors include his wife of twenty-six years, Lois Ann Shelton Graybeal; one son, John Graybeal Jr., Elizabethton; Special daughter, Shanna Peterson and husband, Chris, Erwin; two step-sons: Dwayne Wyatt and wife, Rae, Georgia, and Dennis Wyatt, Elizabethton; Three brothers: Charles Henry Graybeal and wife, Mary Ann, Erwin, Howard Graybeal, Bristol, VA, Ernest Rutter and wife, Geneva, Erwin; three sisters: Florence Roberts and Lucille Hampton, both of Erwin, and Shirley Maynard, CA; Five grandchildren: Haley, Isaac and Jacob Peterson, and Amanda and Timmy Graybeal. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. John Graybeal Sr. will be held Thursday, May 31, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. from the chapel of Erwin Memorial Funeral Home. Reverend Buster Shelton and Reverend Raymond Shelton will officiate. Special music will be provided by Winfred Shelton. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
The committal service will be held in Evergreen Cemetery, Friday, June 1, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. Those attending the service will meet at the funeral home not later then 9:30 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery. The Tennessee Honor Guard consisting of VFW Post #4933 and the Tennessee Army National Guard will conduct full military honors at the graveside.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening prior to the funeral service between the hours of 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
