Samma Alice Marable McDavid, Johnson City

Following a resilient battle with declining health over the past few years, Samma Alice Marable McDavid has moved forward to her heavenly home.
She will be welcomed by her Heavenly Father; her father, Doxie Debro Marable; her mother, Melvia Taylor Marable; her husband, John Robert (Bob) McDavid; and her sister, Nelle Marable Barton; along with a host of other family members and friends.
Alice was a lifelong member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church, where she attended the Fellowship Sunday School Class. She was baptized on January 1, 1926, and received confirmation in 1934. Positions of service were the Children Sunday School Superintendent, Administrative Board member, President of the Fellowship Sunday School Class, Altar Guild member, United Methodist Women’s Circle 14 member and Choir Master for Children.
Alice graduated from Science Hill High School on Friday, May 28th, 1943. She attended East Tennessee State University, with focus in Industrial Chemistry. She was previously employed by Holston Ordinance as a producing lab analyst and by Tennessee Eastman as an experimental lab analyst.
Alice was co-owner of Marable Nurseries, Double M Farm and Double D Farm, with her late husband, Bob.
She held office as District President and Unit President in the Women’s Auxiliary of the American Legion. Alice served as a Cub Scout Den Mother, Girl Scout Brownie Leader and Junior Girl Scout Leader. As well, she served as President of the North Junior High P.T.A. Alice was chosen to be the first Female President of the North Johnson City Business Club. She helped with election registration in Districts 9 and 10 of Washington County. In addition, Alice served as an Advisory Committee Member for the Johnson City Senior Center.
Following a shoulder injury in later life, Alice learned to swim to regain her range of motion. She went on to win numerous swim events at the Tennessee State Senior Olympics, qualifying her for participation in the National Senior Olympics.
Alice’s special love for family, friends and her German Shepherds will truly be missed. She is survived by Samma McDavid, daughter; Bobby McDavid, son; Sharon McDavid, daughter-in-law; Christie McDavid, grand-daughter; Matt McDavid, grand-son, and his wife, Amy McDavid; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral service for Alice will be conducted Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at 2:00 P.M. from the Sanctuary of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Douglas Grove-DeJarnett, Rev. Michael Lester and Rev. Dr. Paul Brown officiating.
Interment will follow in Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Matthew McDavid, Charlie Barton, Wilbur Barton, Mark Robinson, Jimmy Hughes, Rick Chinouth, Eddie Garrett, Dennis Calhoun, Doug Bernardi and Howard Steed. Honorary pallbearers are Joe Crumley, deceased, former Cub Scouts of Den 8, Pack 47, of which she was the former longtime Den Mother.
The family will receive friends Wednesday prior to the service from 12:15-2:00 P.M. at the church.
