Wanda Markham, Hampton

HAMPTON — Wanda G. Markham, 69, of Hampton, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 17, 2012, in the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital.
She was the daughter of the late Allen Bruce Smith and Della Harmon Smith Oliver and was born in Carter County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Markham Sr.; and a brother, George Ray Smith.
Mrs. Markham was a former employee of the Carter County School System and was the first female in Carter County to drive a school bus. She was also employed at the Classic Malt Shop and retired from East Tennessee State University where she worked in food service as a baker.
She was a volunteer with the American Red Cross in Carter County and a member of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church.
Mrs. Markham enjoyed cooking with her granddaughters and fishing with her grandson. She loved to watch Atlanta Braves Baseball, UT Boys and Girl’s Basketball and NASCAR racing with her very special friend, Phil Stevens and family. She loved to watch hummingbirds.
She is survived by a daughter, Della Campbell and her husband, Mike, Elizabethton; two sons, Robert Lewis Markham Jr. and his wife, Deniece, Jason Loel Markham, all of Elizabethton; five grandchildren, Jessica Alayne Markham, Elizabethton, Davy Campbell, Piney Flats, Bobby Dale Campbell and Charline Nicole Campbell, both of Elizabethton, Alex Stevens, Mt. Carmel, TN; a great-grandson, Ben Campbell, Piney Flats; a brother, James R. Smith and his wife, Kathryn, Taylorsville, NC; an aunt, Vivian Sparks, NC; an uncle, Geder Harmon, Butler; and a special companion, Phillip Stevens, Hampton. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
The funeral service for Mrs. Markham will be conducted on Friday, April 20, 2012, at 2:00 PM in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Chapel of Peace, Elizabethton.
The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 1:00-2:00 PM on Friday prior to the service and at the homes of the family members at other times.
Interment will follow the funeral service on Friday at the Rittertown Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Dunn, Bill Crumley, Gary Taylor, Danny Smith, Kit McQueen, Rick Cable, Harry Cable, Rick Guinn, Jack Taylor, John Henson, Clyde Blevins and Jeff Stamper.

The family wants to express a special thank you to the Carter County Emergency Rescue Squad and Wings Air Rescue, the ICU staff of the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital for the all the efforts they made.
