Gary L. Shipley, 62, Gray, went to be the Lord, Sunday, April 1, 2012, at his residence.
Mr. Shipley was a native of Piney Flats and had lived most of his life in Washington County. He was the son of the late Willard and Mary Lou Ensor Shipley. Mr. Shipley was a United States Army veteran, serving in the Vietnam War. He retired from Eastman Chemical Company and was a former employee for the City of Johnson City.
Gary was a member of Boones Creek Baptist Church, V.F.W. and Johnson City Moose Club. Gary was a classic rock enthusiast. Mr. Shipley was a generous and caring man who loved to donate to many local charities.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Ella I. “Jean” Shipley.
He leaves behind his step-daughters, Diana Lynn Bowman and her husband, Bob, Elizabethton, Tracy Shay Greer and her husband, Freddie Smallman, and Lisa Cradic and her husband, Brian, all of Johnson City; step-sons, Ottis Franklin Greer and his wife, Brenda, WI, Ottis Dean Greer and wife, Brenda, Gray, and Orville Gene Greer and wife, Shelby, Johnson City; step-grandchildren, Chris, Layla, Robert, Chris, Jerry, Henry, Caitlyn, Joshua, Tyler and Sandy; step-great grandchildren, Storm, Katie, Nevaeh, Michael, Logan and Lakeisha. Several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.
A Celebration of Life service for Gary L. Shipley will be conducted at 7:00 PM Thursday, April 5, 2012, in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services with Reverend Kenneth Kyker officiating. Music will be under the direction of Karen and Clyde Feathers.
The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel Thursday from 5:00 PM till the service hour.
A Military Committal service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, April 6, 2012, at Mountain Home National Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by V.F.W. Boone Dam Post #4933. Active pallbearers will be Gene Greer, Dean Greer, Chris Hicks, Henry Hicks, Jerry Chappell and Logan Blevins. Honorary pallbearers are the member of the V.F.W. and the Johnson City Moose Club. Everyone is asked to meet the family at the funeral home Friday at 10:15 AM to go in procession to the cemetery.
The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff at Caris Hospice, especially, Nonie, Maria, Kim, Beth and Tracy for the loving care given to Mr. Shipley during his time of need.
