James ‘Jay’ Stone, Jacksonville, Fla.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — James (Jay) Donald Stone, 84, was born on May 15, 1927, in Blackwolfe, McDowell County, West Virginia, and died on March 2, 2012, in Jacksonville, Florida.
Jay joined the Navy in 1945 at age 18 while living in Johnson City, TN. He served 21 years and had many duty stations, such as Hawaii, Japan, California, Washington and Alaska; finally retiring with the rank of Chief, in Jacksonville, FL.
James went on to work for Scott and Trader’s Furniture Companies, Brinks Armored Car services and Atlantic/First Union Nat’l Banks, retiring after 10 years with the bank.
James is a member of Oak Crest United Methodist Church. He also loved golfing, the Florida Gators and his family.
James is predeceased by his parents, Clyde B. and Annie Gentry Stone; brothers, VC Stone and Wade Stone; sisters, Betty Stone Broyles, Thelma Stone and Louise Stone.
James is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Margaret (Peggy) Stone; children, James A. Stone (Kelly), Lynda Provenz (Tracy), Kristine Johnson (Ken), Brian Gross (Charlene), Linda Censon and William Gross (Bonnie); 13 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter. James is also survived by his brother, Clyde (Rusty) Stone; and sisters, Frances Stone Corbett and Bonnie Stone Abbott; as well as several nieces and nephews. James will also be missed by many special friends.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, March 9, 2012, at Oak Crest United Methodist Church, 5900 Ricker Road, at 2:00 PM. Pastor Jerry Carris, officiating.
Family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 PM prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jay’s memory to Community Hospice of NE Florida, 4266 Sunbeam Rd,, Jacksonville, FL 32257; or to the Oak Crest United Methodist Church, Building or Living Endowment Funds.
