Carl Sluder, Piney Flats

Herbert Carl Sluder, 88, Piney Flats, died Sunday, February 5, 2012, at Lakebridge Health Care Center, Johnson City, following a brief illness.
Carl was a Washington County native and had been a lifelong resident of Johnson City and Piney Flats.
He was a son of the late Thomas A. and Julie Osborne Sluder.
Carl was a World War II Army veteran.
He was a professional musician and band leader, where he played the guitar and was lead singer. Carl’s band was the opening act for Patsy Cline, Doc Watson and many others. He played the guitar with several bands, including Jimmy Dean, Roy Clark, Hank Thompson, Billy Grimmer and Doc Watson.
Carl was the owner and operator of Sluder’s Vacuum World from 1981 to 1995.
He was a member of the Hook & Bullet Club.
Carl was an avid golfer and had eleven holes in one. He loved golf, deep sea fishing and making music.
Carl attended Tri-City Church of God.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Willie Lou Long Sluder, in 2011, three grandchildren, Larry Ray Sluder, Carl Chance Sluder and Trina Marie Cordell, six brothers, Elmer, Frank, Dave, Floyd, Edward and Milton Sluder, two sisters, Grace Sluder and Jane Litton, a daughter-in-law, Stella Lee Sluder.
Carl is survived by two sons, Larry “Smokey” Sluder, Johnson City, and Tony Sluder, Piney Flats; one sister, Virginia Temple, Palm Bay, FL; two grandchildren, Rhonda Kay Sluder and Carly Peyton Sluder, both of Johnson City; two great-grandchildren, Beth Turner and Matthew Cordell; two great-great-grandchildren, Hailey and Declan Turner; God Daughters, Glenda Leonard, Garrette Robinson and Kim Coalson; several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff of Lakebridge Health Care Center for their excellent care of Carl.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 8:00 P.M. from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Rev. Rusty Wishon officiating.
The family will receive friends Tuesday prior to the service from 6:00-8:00 P.M. in the East Parlor of the funeral home.
The graveside committal service will be held Wednesday at 3:00 P.M. in Monte Vista Memorial Park with military honors being accorded by the Boone Dam V.F.W. Post #4933 and members of the Tennessee Army National Guard. Active pallbearers will be Charles Harris, Michael Hawkins, Paul Harris, Dave Arnold, Joshua Tucker and Ronald Heaton. Honorary pallbearers will be Jay Hodge, Jeff Scalf, Joe Vargas, James Tucker, Sr., Joseph Leonard, Bo Leonard, Jeremy Leonard, Paul Ketron, Jerry Sheets, Stewart, Jeff Arrowood and Kermit Lilly. Those planning to attend the committal service are to meet at the funeral home by 2:30 P.M. Wednesday to proceed to the cemetery.
