Evelyn Hausman, age 87, resident of Johnson City, Tennessee, since 2005, passed away on Monday, February 06, 2012, at NHC HealthCare in Johnson City.
Evelyn was born on August 29, 1924, in Newark, New Jersey, and spent most of her life in Hillside and Elizabeth, NJ. She was preceded in death by her parents, Issie and Esther Hupert Chernichaw and her siblings, Nathan Chernichaw and Lilian Kopitnikoff. Evelyn was a 1942 graduate of Central High School in Newark, NJ, and was proud of being named the Valedictorian of her graduating class; she was also awarded that year’s Bamberger medal for most outstanding high school student. After high school, she attended Newark University to study accounting. Her professional life was spent as an accountant and bookkeeper for various New Jersey firms, including her family’s business, Pied Piper Ice Cream in Hawthorne, NJ.
The pride and joy of her life, however, were her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Evelyn excelled at whatever she did: at school, at sports, at work, and most importantly, at raising her family. She was a perfectionist and always did her best; excellence seemed to come naturally to her. She loved music, especially Harry Belafonte and Frank Sinatra, and sports. Joe Montana was her favorite player even though she was a lifelong Giants fan.
Grandma Evy, as she was affectionately known, is survived by her children, Ed and Becky Hausman of Gray, TN; Marsha Candela of Albuquerque, NM, and Helaine Hausman of Phoenix, AZ; eight grandchildren, Hannah, Halle, Erica, David, Caleb, Elisha, Joshua, and Dara; six great-grandchildren, Lexie, Tommy, Mia, Marshall, Jacksen, and Noah; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
Evelyn’s family would like to express their gratitude to the wonderful medical team at NHC — Dr. Dossett, the CNA’s, nurses, and staff — for being so kind, supportive, and loving during the last two years of our mother’s life — they became our extended family! The family also thanks Morris Baker Funeral Home in Johnson City and Bernheim Apter Kreitzman Funeral Home in Livingston, NJ, for their assistance with funeral arrangements.
Graveside services and interment will be at Knesseth Israel Cemetery in Newark, NJ, on Tuesday, February 7, 2012. May her memory be for a blessing.
