Eugene Parker, Gray

Eugene M. “Bean” Parker, 84, son of the late Stephen A. and Nancy A. Parker journeyed to his eternal home on Friday, January 20, 2012, surrounded by family and friends.
Eugene was born in Kingsport, TN, and moved to Gray, TN, at an early age. He was saved at the age of nine in a revival conducted by the late B.R. Lakin in the old Gray School building and was baptized in the creek on the R.N. Brown Farm.
He was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church until he moved to Florida. While in Florida, he was a member of Clearlake Baptist Church in Cocoa, where he was ordained deacon in May of 1962, and served in many capacities until returning to Gray. He united with Beulah Baptist Church and later Tri-Cities Baptist Church, attending regularly until health issues prevented him.
Eugene proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, spent eighteen months overseas in England and received an honorable discharge.
He was a Charter Member of the Gray Rescue Squad and taught First Aid and CPR classes during his service.
Eugene was known for his smile and laugh that would brighten any day. He always looked for opportunities to share Christ with others. He loved the outdoors and the beauty of the mountains. He enjoyed gardening and watching things grow. He often experimented with a variety of vegetables and delighted in sharing his bounty with friends and Second Harvest Food Bank.
Besides his parents, Eugene was preceded in death by a brother, Stephen A. Parker Jr; sisters and their husbands, Ruth Parker Hamilton (Earl), Thelma A. Littrell (Charles), Cora Lee Harkleroad (Dana); a niece, Agnes Hamilton Slagle; a nephew, James Littrell; a brother-in-law, Carl W. Coffman; a sister-in-law, Jean Coffman.
Eugene is survived by his wife and best friend of 58 years, Marie Parker; brother, William L. “Cotton” Parker (Ruth), of Old Hickory, TN; special great niece, Ericha Coffman Garrison (Thomas); brothers-in-law, Edward Coffman, Lee Coffman (Wilma), Hugh Coffman ( JoAnn); special cousins, Anthony (Chola), Kristie, Jesse Ford; nieces, Nancy Brinkley, Pamela Collins (John), Patricia Parker, Penny Carter, Pepper Smith (Brad), Mary Morton (Sam), Dorothy Littrell, Kay Diablo, Ruth Coffman Fields (Michael), Katie Coffman, Cathy Coffman; nephews, Donny Littrell (Billie), Stephen Coffman (Linda), Andrew Coffman (Erin), Edward Coffman Jr. (Judy), Darrell Coffman (Jill); several great nieces and great nephews.
Services for Eugene will be at Gray Funeral Home, Gray TN. The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 22, with the funeral services following at 2 p.m. Col. David White, Reverend Al South and Dr. Danzel Fink will conduct the Celebration of Life service. Musical service conducted by Andy Coffman, Ericha Garrison, Wilma Coffman and Kay Kay Fields.
Military graveside service will be held at Gray Cemetery, Gray, TN, on Sunday, January 22, 2012, immediately following the funeral service. The American Legion Post 3/265 will conduct the services.
