Mary Nell Vannoy Stegall, of Johnson City, passed away Friday, January 13, 2012.
Mary Nell was born on July 7, 1927, near Greeneville, TN, to Jennie Mae Crumley Vannoy and Virgil Osborne Vannoy. She grew up in the Liberty Hill Community in Chuckey, TN. She attended Chuckey High School and graduated from the Laughlin Clinic School of Nursing in Knoxville, TN.
In 1960, she married James Harry Stegall, lived in various locations throughout the United States, and retired to live in Johnson City in 2000. For many years, Mary Nell was a caregiver to aunts, parents and her husband.
She was predeceased by her husband; her parents; her sister, Edith Rachel Vannoy Baxter; her brothers, Thomas Milton Vannoy and Kenneth Paul Vannoy; and stepson, Charles Richard Stegall.
She is survived by stepsons, James David Stegall (Cheryl), of Port Aransas, TX, and Gary Gaines Stegall (Treania), of Lorena, TX; six grandchildren; and 24 great grandchildren.
She is also survived by sister-in-law, Gretta “Betty” Miller Vannoy; niece, Rebecca Vannoy (Billy H. Jr.) Campbell, nephew Christopher P. (Camilla Long) Vannoy, of Chuckey; brother-in-law, Glen Baxter Sr., of Fall Branch; niece, Polly Baxter (John S.) Moyle, of Kingsport; niece, Betty Baxter Cangelosi and nephew, Glen “Bo” Baxter Jr., of Fall Branch; and several great nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2012, at Liberty Hill United Methodist Church, 3585 Old Snapps Ferry Road, Chuckey, TN 37641-4071, with Rev. Sharon Amstutz officiating.
Interment of Mary Nell Vannoy Stegall and James H. Stegall ashes will be at Liberty Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery. There will be no graveside service.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Liberty Hill United Methodist Church or to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 603 Sunset Drive, Johnson City, TN 37604.
