BAKERSVILLE, N.C. — Mae Parsons Slagle, 97, died January 11, 2012.
She was a lifelong resident of Mitchell County who lived in the same house in the Fork Mountain community for the past 77 years.
She was born February 22, 1914, the oldest child of John C. and Viola Greene Parsons, of the Mine Creek community. Mae was a 1931 graduate of Bowman High School and a 1933 graduate of Asheville Normal Teachers College.
Mae taught in the Mitchell County Public School System for 38 years: two years at Piney Branch, a one-room school on Fork Mountain Road; four years at Buladean Elementary; and thirty-two years teaching first and second grades at Glen Ayre Elementary. Decades later, Mae’s former students remember her as a kind, generous and caring person who provided many children with food and clothing.
Mae had lived independently for the past 30 years. She loved reading, enjoyed traveling and was a faithful member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and played the piano. She remained remarkably active and walked the Appalachian Trail across the Balds of Roan Mountain at the age of 90.
She is survived by her three sons: John and wife, June, of Arden, NC, Van and wife, Carol, of Randleman, NC, and Dan and wife, Evelyn, of Raleigh, NC. In addition, she leaves 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She is survived by a brother, Robert Parsons, of Port Charlotte, FL; and a sister, Kate Gage, of Johnson City, TN; and by her very special neighbors, Wade and Mattie Lee Campbell.
Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Burgess Slagle, who died in 1981; two brothers, Jack Parsons and George Parsons; a sister, Lou Abel; and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, January 14, 2012, in the Chapel of Henline-Hughes Funeral Home with Rev. Harold Grindstaff officiating.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00 PM prior to the service.
Interment will be at the Green Young Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Mitchell County, 236 Hospital Drive, Spruce Pine, North Carolina 28777.
