John E. Scott, age 91, of Johnson City, TN, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 10, 2012, at the Johnson City Medical Center following a brief illness.
A lifelong native of Washington County, he was a son of the late Horace and Bonnie Leach Scott. Mr. Scott was an Army Air Corps Veteran, having earned the Silver Star and the Bronze Star during WW II. During WW II he was involved in 5 major battles including the D-Day invasion of Normandy.
He loved farming, the mountains, farm animals and wildlife. He knew every type of tree in Southern Appalachia. He loved to tell stories to his family and friends.
Mr. Scott was a faithful member of Union Christian Church, and loved visiting First Church of God. He considered his wealth in this world as giving his all to others.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Scott was preceded in death by two brothers, Stanley and Grady Scott; two sisters, Helen Shuherk and Ada Walters; two grandchildren, Whitney Brooke Horne and Brandon Scott Horne.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Betty Jane Carter Scott, Johnson City; four daughters, Rosia Scott, Johnson City, Alethea Scott Horne and husband, Danny, Kingsport, Bonita Scott, Chuckey, TN, Hazel Gray and husband, Danny, Erwin; an adopted daughter and friend who always made him laugh, Cydeena Turner, Kingsport; grandchildren, Garrett Horne, Kingsport, and Ashley Scott, Johnson City; sister, Glenna Evans, Johnson City. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mr. Scott will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Friday, January 13, 2012, in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Mr. Charles Fitzsimmons, Mr. Lamar Garrison and Pastor Ron McEwen officiating. Music will be under the direction of Brian Scott of Sacred Harmony and Wings of Eagles of First Church of God.
The family will receive friends Friday from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. in the East Parlor of the funeral home.
The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, January 14, at Roselawn Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Everett Scott, Wayne Scott, Douglas Evans, John Scott, Michael Scott, Marty Shuherk, Mike Mahaffey Brian Scott. Honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Scott, Harry Purdy, Richard Hoss, Lonnie Webb, Lloyd Webb and John Stone.
Those who wish to attend the graveside are asked to meet at the funeral home at 12:30 P.M. Saturday to go in procession the cemetery.
