Jean Ramsey Shepherd, Gray

Jean Ramsey Shepherd, age 76, of Gray passed away on Sunday, December 25, 2011 after a long illness.
Jean was born in Kingsport and lived her entire life in East Tennessee. Jean graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School, and later worked there as a secretary in the special needs department. She was very active in Special Olympics and helped coach the Special Olympians from Dobyns Bennett for many years. She retired from the Kingsport City School System in 1992, but continued to work with the Special Olympics on the state level for several years after that. Jean was a member of Colonial Heights Christian Church for more than 40 years and was very active in various ladies activities at the church. She organized the first women’s retreat for the church and went to all of them until she became too ill to attend.
Jean is survived by her husband of 57 ½ years, Freddie A. Shepherd; son, Allen Shepherd and wife Tracy; daughter, Gina Strouth and husband Mike; brother, Ed Ramsey and wife Sue; grandchildren, Tyler Shepherd, Jay Strouth, Haley Lee and husband Tim. Jean is further survived by several nieces, nephews, and many good friends.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at 2:00 PM in Oak Hill Memorial Park in the Garden of Good Shepherd.
A memorial of life service will be held at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at Colonial Heights Christian Church with Reverend Robert Tyler officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made in Jean’s honor to Crossroads Missions, 3231 Ruckriegel Pkwy, Suite 111, Louisville, KY, 40299.
