Evalyn Brower, Elizabethton

ELIZABETHTON — Evalyn Barker Brower, age 96, formerly of West G Street and Parkway Boulevard, died Wednesday, December 14, 2011, in the Ivy Hall Nursing Home.
A native of Mendota, VA, she was the daughter of the late C.M. and Sadie Pippin Barker. She was a 1936 graduate of Emory and Henry College and taught briefly at Valley Institute before moving to Elizabethton in 1941 to begin working at Bemberg, where she was the first female hired to work in the chemical laboratory.
When Bemberg closed in 1970, she began a teaching career with the Elizabethton City School System where she taught at Elizabethton High School and T.A. Dugger Junior High School.
She enjoyed traveling, which included a trip around the world in 1965. Other hobbies included photography, conducting wild flower tours and bird watching.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Paul V. Brower, in 1987; three brothers, Earl (1912), Ernest (1983) and Sam (2008) Barker; and one sister, Alice Barker (2005). She was preceded in death also by a stepdaughter, Barbara Baughman.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Betty Jo O’Brien Barker; one nephew and his wife, Richard and Marilynn Barker; and one niece, and her husband, Debbie and Joe Alexander, all of Elizabethton; a step-son, Dr. Bob Brower and his wife, Patti, Tucson, AZ; also survived by a stepson-in-law, Earl Baughman; two step-granddaughters, Elizabeth Florio and Gretchen Baughman. Two step-grandsons, Bobby and Steve Brower, also survive. Several stepgreat-granchildren also survive.
Mrs. Brower was a lifelong member of Mendota United Methodist Church, past member of the Elizabethton/Carter County Retired Teachers Association, and the Elizabethton Women’s Club and was a member of the American Chemical Society for over sixty years.
The family would like to express a very special thank you to the entire staff of Ivy Hall Nursing Home for their excellent care of Ev over the past year, and also to caregivers Bonnie Stout, Doris Morgan and Billie Glass.
A graveside service for Mrs. Brower will be held on Friday, December 16, 2011, at 10:00 AM at Mountain View Cemetery in Bristol, VA, with Rev. Ray Amos and Father Dennis Kress conducting the service.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Thursday, December 15, 2011, at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, or at the home of her sister-in-law, Betty Jo Barker, at other times. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are invited to meet the family at the funeral home Friday at 9:00 AM to go in procession to the cemetery.
