Mark Hicks Jr., Johnson City

Mark Clyde Hicks Jr., 84, Johnson City, passed away on Tuesday, December 13, 2011, at his residence.
A native of Sevierville, TN, he was the son of the late Mark Clyde Hicks Sr. and Alice Trotter Hicks. Mr. Hicks was a graduate of Science Hill High School and served one year with the US Navy.
After his service in the Navy, Mark attended ETSU for two years before obtaining his Law Degree from Vanderbilt University School of Law. He was a Senior Partner with Hicks, Arnold, Haynes & Sanders for 25 years and also served as the Washington County Attorney for 18 years.
Mark was very active in Washington County, having served on the Tri-City Regional Airport Commission for 35 years, the Tennessee Republican Executive Committee for 39 years, and in 1984 he was a Presidential Elector. He also served on the Johnson City Medical Center Board, the Johnson City Power Board, The Republican National Committee, the Tennessee Historical Commission and the Board of Directors for First Tennessee Bank. He was a member of the American Legion, Sons of the Revolution, Johnson City Rotary Club and the ETSU Foundation.
Mark was a great supporter of Johnson City, Washington County and the surrounding communities. He appreciated the support his family has always received from the community and was always eager to give in return. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
He leaves behind one son and daughter-in-law, Mark Clyde Hicks III and Carol Annette Hicks, Jonesborough; one daughter, Ellen Hicks Thornton, Nashville; granddaughter, Margaret Alice Hicks, Jonesborough; two step-granddaughters, Sydney Elizabeth Hester, Murfreesboro, and Sarah Hester Brown, Erwin; the mother of his children, Lois Dillow Hicks; and two cousins, Julia Winters, Johnson City, and Emily Gilreath, Cartersville, GA.
A Celebration of Life service for Mr. Mark Clyde Hicks Jr. will be conducted at 7:00 PM Friday, December 16, 2011, in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services with Reverend Louis Imsande officiating.
A Committal and Interment service will be at 11:00 AM Saturday, December 17, 2011, in Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active Pallbearers will be Robert “Don” Arnold, Olen G. Haynes, John E. Sanders, Carroll Richardson, Michael Elam, Clarence “Jake” Jacobs, Dr. Robert Bagby, Latham “Red” Winn, Ed Parker, Mike Rutherford, Dr. Avtar Dhaliwal, Tom Carr, John Bullington and Dr. Phil Walters. Honorary Pallbearers are the members of the Pairs and Spares Sunday School class and the members of the Washington County Commission.
The family will greet friends in the funeral home chapel Friday from 5:00 PM until the service hour.
The family would like to express a special thank you to his loving caregivers and Caris Hospice for the care and support given to Mr. Hicks and the family.
