Ruth McCoury, Erwin

ERWIN — Ruth Laws McCoury, age 92, Rock Creek Road, Erwin, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, December 6, 2011, at Unicoi County Memorial Hospital.
She was born November 11, 1919, to Caney Laws and Savannah Bailey Laws. Mrs. McCoury was one of several million ladies who worked for the war effort during World War II in Portland, Oregon, as a welder building Liberty and Victory ships.
She Married Roy McCoury of Unicoi in 1948 and became the stepmother to Edna, Zelma and Phyllis. In 1961, she and her husband adopted their year old grandson, Roy Mac. After her husband retired, she began working for the Unicoi County Memorial Hospital until she retired in 1989.
Mrs. McCoury was a founding member of Zion Church of Jesus in Unicoi and attended services there for over 50 years. She loved and followed the Lord with her entire being.
Mrs. McCoury helped others at every opportunity and was a great and loving mother. Her remaining family and many others in the community will miss her deeply, grieve her passing and rejoice in her arrival with the Lord in Heaven.
Other than her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Roy McCoury; two stepdaughters, Edna Lesher and Zelma Hale; granddaughter, Ruth Ann McCawley; three brothers: Clyde Laws, Bob Laws and L.C. Laws.
Mrs. McCoury is survived by her son, Roy Mac McCoury and wife, Lori, Unicoi; stepdaughter, Phyllis White, of Pembroke Pines, Fla. Her grandchildren are Isaiah McCoury, Gary White, Shannon White, Roy Lynn Hale, Cynthia Hale and Michelle Hale, along with numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; three sisters, Pauline Laws Ellis, of Elizabethton, Kathleen Laws McIntosh, Unicoi, and Mary Jane Laws Linville, of Brandon, Fla.; brother and sister-in law, Jeff and Nancy Laws, of Walkertwon, N.C.; sister-in law, Genevieve Honeycutt Laws, Erwin.
Funeral service for Mrs. Ruth McCoury will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, December 10, 2011, in the chapel of Unicoi Funeral Home with Reverend Kevin Laws officiating. Special piano music will be provided by Inez Chandler and solo selections will be provided by Reverend Kevin Laws.
Interment will follow at RoseLawn Memorial Park. Active pallbearers selected are Charlie Laws, Roger Laws, Mike McIntosh, Tim McInturff, Mike Chambers and David Ellis.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. until service time at the funeral home.
