Guy Garland, Unicoi

UNICOI — Guy C. Garland, 81, Unicoi, died Tuesday, December 6, 2011, at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Nursing Home, Mountain Home, following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Garland was a Washington County native and a son of the late Elmer and Ruby Britt Garland. He lived in Fort Blackmore, Virginia, before joining the Army, where he served for 12 years. Mr. Garland and wife Florene moved back to Unicoi after he left the service. He lived in Unicoi for over 30 years.
Mr. Garland was a Korean War veteran. He received both the Silver Star and Purple Heart for his courageous service to his country. Mr. Garland loved to travel and met his Korean War comrades once a year in different places around the country for what was called the “Scrappy Pill” reunion. In 1985, he returned to Korea to visit his daughter and son-in-law and climbed the mountain near Tabudong, where he was wounded during the war.
He retired as an Administrative Assistant from the Johnson City Medical Center in 1994 after more than thirty years of service. Over the years, he worked in multiple departments, including Housekeeping, Engineering and Building and Grounds. He helped organize the yearly hospital picnics and played on the hospital softball team.
Mr. Garland was of the Christian faith.
He loved U.T. football, baseball and bowling. He farmed and did upholstery work in his spare time. He was known for his cheerful disposition and heartwarming smile.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of thirty-nine years, Florene Higgins Garland, in 1996; two brothers, Wayne and Jim Garland; and step-mother, Zetta Garland.
Mr. Garland is survived by two daughters, Lisa Estep and husband, Danny, Jonesborough, Lora Edwards and husband, James, Unicoi; two sons, Steve Garland and wife, Cricket, Davenport, FL, James Bradley Garland and wife, Tina, Statesville, NC; three grandchildren, Roy C. Edwards, Unicoi, Parker and Reagan Garland, Davenport, FL; two step-grandchildren, Joshua Wilkerson and Christina Moore; three brothers, Joe Garland and wife, Ruth, Bob Garland and Harold Garland and wife, Vivian; one sister, Mary Ruth Smith and husband, Hank; several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express a special thank you to his pastor, Mike Garland, the caregivers at the V.A. nursing home and hospital, Broadmore Assisted Living and Asbury Center.
The funeral service will be conducted Sunday, December 11, 2011, at 4:00 P.M. from the East Chapel of the Appalachian Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Garland officiating.
The family will receive friends Sunday prior to the service from 2:00-4:00 P.M. in the East Parlor of the funeral home.
The graveside committal service will be held Monday, December 12, 2011, at 11:00 A.M. in Mountain Home National Cemetery with military honors being accorded by the Boone Dam V.F.W. Post #4933. Pallbearers will be James Edwards, Roy Edwards, Tony Garland, Darrell Garland, Steven Garland and Kevin Garland. Those planning to attend are to meet at the funeral home by 10:30 A.M. Monday to proceed to the cemetery.
