Joe-Stella Stewart-Henderson, Elizabethton

Mrs. Joe-Stella Stewart-Henderson was born May 04, 1925 in Pelzer, South Carolina in Greenville County. She was the daughter of the late John Stewart and Queen Esther Chapman-Stewart. She completed her journey residing with her very loving and dutiful daughter Patricia A. Golden-Johnson of Elizabethton, TN; in the company of family and friends.
At an early age, Joe gave her life to Christ at New Forksville Baptist Church in Honea Path, SC. Relocating to Detroit, Michigan; she established membership at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Detroit. She then relocated to Elizabethton, TN in 2006 where she united with Thankful Baptist Church of Johnson City, TN.
Mrs. Joe-Stella attended Benedict College in Columbia, SC. She served as Principle at Pine Hill School and was the last surviving teacher of the New Forksville School of Honea Path, SC. She put her unique gift for making clothing to use in Detroit and became a sought out seamstress.
Momma Joe is survived by her loving husband, Otis Henderson, Sr. of Detroit, MI. Daughters Rev. Maude (William) Scott of Piedmont, SC; Patricia A. Golden (Rev. C. Danny) Johnson of Elizabethton, TN; Dr. Gwen (Rev. Melvin) Parker of Jackson, MI; Debbie (Lonnie) Spencer of Detroit and son, Rev. Otis (Toni) Henderson, Jr. of Detroit. Stepdaughter Estell Wilder from Inman, SC. Grandchildren, Robert, Veronica, Erick, Garrett, Taylor, Jordan, Star, Tyler and Kyle, Pamela, Justin and Joshua. Her surviving siblings are brother Artis (Ottie Lee) Stewart and sister Pauline Johnson of Pelzer, SC. Three sister’s in-law; Gracie Stewart, Pelzer, SC; Janie Stewart, Piedmont, SC and Ernestine Stewart of Detroit, MI. There are many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Special mention must be made for the help of Helena Kuylee and Mountain State Hospice.
Joe was preceded by her grandson Lajuan Henderson; a granddaughter Tamara Wilder; brothers Edward, John, Richard, Theodore Stewart and sister Mary L. Hill.
The celebration of her home-going will be held at Thankful Baptist Church on November 16, with viewing from 6:30 to 7:00, the homegoing service will begin at 7 pm. The graveside service will be at New Forksville Baptist Church in Honea Path, SC on November 19, 2011, under the direction of Watkins-Garrett Mortuary.
