Marie Hathaway Buchanan, Elizabethton

Marie Hathaway Buchanan, age 100, of Elizabethton, passed away on Sunday, November 13, 2011 in the Ivy Hall Nursing Home in Elizabethton. Mrs. Buchanan was the last member of one of Carter County’s early families and was a native of Elizabethton. She was the daughter of the late E.E. Hathaway (Sept. 11, 1956) and Celia Pearce Hathaway (Dec. 6, 1955). In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Alexander Buchanan (June 29, 1971). He will be remembered in this area and North Carolina as a salesman for McCowan and Mahoney Company of Johnson City and Myers Dry Goods Company of Morristown.

Mrs. Buchanan was also preceded in death by four brothers: James Albert Hathaway (May 16, 1928), Fred William Hathaway (June 19, 1972), Roy Rutherford Hathaway (April 30, 1976) and Lt. Col. Harry Carriger Hathaway (Nov. 19, 1981); two nieces, Jean Hathaway Worcester (Dec. 11, 1997) and Alberta “Bo” Lusk, (June 6, 2008); one nephew, Sidney Boring Hathaway (July 31, 1997); one great nephew, Brian Broome (Aug. 7, 2005).

Mrs. Buchanan retired from teaching after having taught for thirty-three years. Most of her teaching career was in the field of Special Education, having been a teacher for homebound children for a number of years. At the time of her retirement in 1977, she was the teacher for the Educable Mentally Retarded Class at Harold McCormick Elementary School. At that time she held membership in a number of education organizations. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Elizabethton and was a member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class.

Survivors include one son, Ernest “Buckie” Hathaway Buchanan and his wife, Patsy Ann Whisnant Buchanan, Bristol, TN; one grandson, Ernest Jeffery Buchanan and his wife, Victoria Kirkpatrick Buchanan, Douglasville, GA; one granddaughter, Ann Michelle Buchanan, Louisville, TN; two great grandsons, Joseph Kirkpatrick, Douglasville, GA, and Joshua Ryne Wheeler, Louisville, TN; one great granddaughter, Andrea Rachell Wheeler, Louisville, TN; one great-great grandson, Brendon Kirkpatrick, Douglasville, GA; three nieces, Janey Knox, Florida; Dottie Broome and Betty Lou Day, both of Elizabethton; six great nieces, Dicky Lou Cooter, Linda Crowe, Lisa Jo Lusk, Amy Lusk, Harriett Lowe and Susan Hathaway; four great nephews, Michael Cooter, Col. Mark Cooter, Matthew H. Cooter and Scott Lusk. Several great-great nieces, great-great nephews and cousins also survive.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, November 16, 2011 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with Dr. Jim Royston officiating. Music will be under the direction of the First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 6:30-7:30 PM on Tuesday, November 15th at the funeral home and also from 1:00-2:00 PM on Wednesday, November 16th prior to the funeral in the chapel. The graveside service and interment will follow the funeral at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Chris Hambrick, Scott Lusk, Joe Lusk, Christopher Dunbar, Michael Cooter, Matthew Cooter, Col. Mark Cooter, Millard Day, Dr. John L. Hathaway, William Trammell, A.J. Potter, Joshua Ryne and Roger Hamm. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerald Lowe, Sr., Charles “Chuck” Mack, Phil Isaacs, Richard Sharpin, Richard Myers, Joe Alexander and Richard Barker.
