Ross E. Abel, 70, of Johnson City, passed away at his residence on Monday, November 7, 2011.
He was a native of Roanoke, VA, and a son of the late Fred L. Sr. and Marylee Maine Abel.
Mr. Abel was a retired Welder for Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 538. He was a 50 year member of the local union.
He was a member of University Parkway Baptist Church.
Mr. Abel was a wonderful husband, dad, papaw and friend. He was a great storyteller.

Survivors include; his wife, Patsy K. Owens Abel; two sons, Ross W. Abel and his wife, Melanie D., and Tim Abel, all of Johnson City; two Grandchildren, Zac and Luke Abel, both of Johnson City; two brothers, Fred Abel Jr. and Kenneth Abel, both of Johnson City; two sisters, Henrietta Abel and Carolyn Abel, both of Johnson City; and several nieces and nephews. His extended family: Ashley Anne Abel and Janice and John Walton.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 9, 2011, from the University Parkway Baptist Church. Dr. Michael D. Oaks will officiate.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday from the Monte Vista Burial Park. Family and friends will meet at the graveside. Active pallbearers will be Michael Owens, Bobby Owens, Charles Gilley, Tony Love, Hurschell Scalf, Big Jim Murray, Roger Lambert, Harry Ford, Chuck Gilley and Dave Abel. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Charles Famoyin, Dr. Kenneth Cutshall, Dr. Tony Haley, Fred Abel Jr., John Walton, Jim Owens, Mickey Archer, Zac Abel and Luke Abel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mountain States Foundation, Niswonger Children’s Hospital, 2335 Knob Creek Road, Suite #101, Johnson City, TN 37604-9945.
The family will receive friends at the church from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
