Freddie James “Fred” Smith, age 62, of 1709 Colonial Ridge Rd., Johnson City, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, November 2, 2011, at Forrest General Hospital, Hattiesburg, MS.
A native of Crossville, TN, he was a son of Edith Christine Moore Smith, Indianapolis, IN, and the late Wilford James Smith.
Mr. Smith was working in Laurel, MS, for the state of Mississippi as a Facilities Manager at Ability Works, where he was involved in numerous community activities.
Mr. Smith attended West Laurel United Methodist Church. He was an Eagle Scout in Crossville, TN, and had volunteered with the Boy Scouts in Manchester, TN. Mr. Smith was a member of the Masonic Lodge F.& A.M., Jonesborough Post # 47, and the Literacy Council in Laurel, MS.
In addition to his father, Mr. Smith is preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Nancy Ward Smith and James Henry and Martha Moore.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Dortha Thurman Smith, Johnson City; special daughter, Kimberly Paige Roberts, Rockwood, TN; brother and sister-in-law, Michael Ray and Susan Smith, Indianapolis, IN; one niece Jenna Smith, Michigan; one nephew, Taylor Smith, Indianapolis, IN.
The funeral service for Mr. Smith will be conducted at 6:00 PM Monday, November 7, 2011, in the chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Rev. Darrell Cantrell officiating.
The family will receive friends Monday from 4:00 until 6:00 PM in the parlor of the funeral home.
The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 1:00 PM (CST) at Charles Creek Cemetery, McMinnville, TN. Those who wish to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 12:50 P.M. Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Boys Scout Troop # 174, ℅ Daniel Dial, 173 Scarlett Dr., Crossville, TN 38555.
