William Pence, Greeneville, S.C.

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Mr. Pence, 94, formerly of Salisbury, NC, died October 25, 2011, in Greenville, SC.
He was born on August 2nd, 1917, in Limestone, TN, to the late David Byerly and Willie Pates Pence.
He was educated at Washington College Academy and the University of Tennessee, where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He later continued his education at the School of Business, Miami, FL.
Despite losing one eye in childhood, he became a private pilot. During World War II, he served in Military Intelligence. After the war, he worked for his father’s bank in Limestone, TN, in Johnson City in an advertising firm, and then moved to Salisbury NC, in 1950, where he was the executive for the Rowan County Chamber of Commerce for a over decade, later becoming the vice president of the NC Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Salisbury, NC.
He retired to Linville, NC, where he lived for 25 years. He enjoyed travel to all 50 States, and to Canada, Europe and South America. He wrote travel articles for various magazines.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Evelyn; and his son, William David.
Survivors include wife, Betty, of Johnson City; his sons, Dr. Richard Pence and wife, Janet, of Denver, NC, Thomas Pence and wife, Katherine, of Greenville, SC, and Dr. Ken Pence and wife, Meredith, of Nashville, TN; Grandchildren, David Pence and wife, April, of Greenville, SC, Dr. Alex Pence and wife, Eula, of Asheville, NC, Canon Pence and wife, Julie, of Raleigh, NC, Evelyn Jones, of Greenville, SC, Alexis Pence, of Nashville, Charlton Pence and Meredith Pence, of Nashville, TN; and 2 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, October 29, 2011, at Salem Cemetery, Washington College Community.
