Rachel Shipley, Johnson City

Rachel Shipley, 86, Johnson City, died Sunday, October 9, 2011, at the Johnson City Medical Center, following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Shipley was a native of Lenoir, NC and had been a resident of Johnson City most of her life.
She was a daughter of the late Albert and Ina Shuford Icenhour.
Mrs. Shipley was a homemaker.
She volunteered for the Washington County Election Commission for more than fifty years working elections primarily at Town Acres Elementary School.
Mrs. Shipley was an active member of Boones Creek Christian Church, where she was a member of the Mary Keefauver Sunday School Class, the Ladies Quilting Society of the church, the widow’s group and treasurer of the Ladies Missionary Society.
She loved cooking, gardening and was an avid quilter.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Shipley was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Shipley, in 1999, a daughter, Jessie Lynn Jones, in 2008, a granddaughter, Jaclyn Edwards, two sisters, Ruth Barlow and Lilyan Brown.
She is survived by one son, Larry Shipley and wife Virginia, Kingsport; one daughter, Patricia Edwards and husband David, Clayton, NC; son-in-law Freddie Jones, Jonesborough; eight grandchildren, Carol Ann Shipley, Sherry Dockery, Kristi Cain, Scott Edwards, Kati Wilson, Cindy Widener, Casey Jones and Holly Fisher; ten great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, October 11, 2011, at 7:00P.M. from the Sanctuary of Boones Creek Christian Church, with Dick Morris, Minister, officiating.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 4:00-7:00 P.M. in the church.
The graveside committal service will be held Wednesday at 12:00 P.M. in Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Casey Jones, Chris Widener, Tim Fisher, Freddie Jones, Dean Crumley, Ed Bowman, Barry Redman and Perry Rindfleisch. Honorary pallbearers will be Leroy Cobble, Jim Brant and Eddie McCrary. Those planning to attend are requested to meet at the funeral home by 11:30 A.M. Wednesday to proceed to the cemetery.
The family requests that in-lieu-of flowers, memorials be made to the Ladies Quilting Society of Boones Creek Christian Church, 305 Christian Church Rd., Gray, TN 37615.
