Dr. William Pafford, Johnson City

Dr. William N. Pafford, 82, passed away on Wednesday, October 5, 2011, at Wellington Place of Johnson City.
Dr. Pafford was born in Benton County, TN, the son of the late Robert P. and Martha J. Pafford. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers
From 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War, he served stateside in the US Army. After being discharged from the Army, he attended college at George Peabody College, earning a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Biology, followed by a Specialist in Education degree. He then obtained a doctorate in Science Education from the University of Kentucky.
During his lengthy teaching career he taught at Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, TN, Radford College in Virginia, and the University of Kentucky before joining the faculty of East Tennessee State University in 1967.
At East Tennessee Sate University, in addition to teaching science education classes, he served in various administrative positions: Chair of the Department of General Science and Education, Assistant Dean of Education, Associate Dean of Education and Chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Dr. Pafford was active professionally, serving many years as Director of the Tennessee Junior Academy of Science. He retired from East Tennessee State University in 1992.
After retirement he served on several boards, including the Tipton-Haynes Historical Site and the Crumley House. He was a member of Munsey Memorial Methodist Church and attended the Virgil Anderson Sunday School Class. When not at home with his family, Dr. Pafford could often be found trout fishing, his much loved hobby.
Dr. Pafford is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Pafford; two sons, William R. Pafford and his wife, Jill, Durham, NC, Stanton Lee Pafford, Istanbul, Turkey; one brother, Gordon K. Pafford and his wife, Roberta, Gallatin, TN; several nieces and nephews; several cousins; two sisters-in-law and their husbands; and two brothers-in-law and their wives.
The family would like to thank the staff at Wellington Place for the care and affection they gave “Doc.”
A Celebration of Life service for Dr. William N. Pafford will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Monday, October 10, 2011, in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services, Johnson City, with Reverend Vance Eastridge officiating. Music will be under the direction of Carlene Eastridge.
Committal and Interment service will follow at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers are Ronnie Wayne Smith, James Hargis, Gene Crowder, Jack Rhoton, Gary Hargis and W.R. Jumper.
The family will greet friends in the funeral home chapel from 4:00 PM-5:00 PM on Sunday, October 9, 2011.
