James C. “Jay” Matherly, 80, 3408 Linkwood Dr., Johnson City, died Monday, October 3, 2011, at the Johnson City Medical Center.
Jay was a native of Steinman, VA, and had been a resident of Johnson City for the past fifty years.
He was a son of the late Charles Henry and Florence Hill Matherly.
Jay was a 1949 graduate of Clinchco High School, Clinchco, VA, and received a B.S. Degree from Lincoln Memorial University, Harrogate, in 1953.
He entered the U.S. Army in 1954, where he served in Germany during the Korean War.
Jay was employed with General Motors in Detroit from 1955 until 1959, at which time he began his employment with G.M.A.C., where he worked in the Johnson City office until his retirement in 1988.
He was a member of Gray United Methodist Church and the Johnson City Sail & Power Squadron.
Jay loved boating, his 1965 Corvair Spyder Convertible and traveling.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, Stacey and Jeane Matherly; brother-in-law, Don Kennedy; father and mother-in-law, Niles and Leola Gray.
Jay is survived by his wife of twenty-eight years, Sandra Gray Matherly; his sister, Billie Lois Kennedy, Abingdon, VA; nephews, Roger Kennedy and wife, Martha, Jonesborough, Mark Kennedy, Abingdon; niece, Mary Jaye Cook, Atlanta; two great-nephews, Ryan and Eric Harrison, Atlanta; great-niece, Jayde Kennedy Logan, Abingdon; cousin, Howard Matherly and wife, Marie, Elizabethton; sister-in-law, Martha Gray Kennedy and husband, Roger, Jonesborough.
The funeral service will be conducted Thursday, October 6, 2011, at 7:30 P.M. from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Rev. Lloyd Jones and Pastor Andy Barnes officiating.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 5:30 until 7:30 P.M. in the East Parlor of the funeral home.
The graveside committal service will be held Friday, October 7, 2011, at 1:00 P.M. in the Mausoleum Chapel of Washington County Memory Gardens. Those planning to attend are to meet at the cemetery by 12:50 P.M. Active pallbearers will be Richard Gray, Johnny Gray, Tim Barnes, Dave Adams, Phil McLain, Don McCracken, Charles “Shorty” Glass and Denton Ferguson. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Johnson City Sail & Power Squadron, and former co-workers of G.M.A.C., Johnson City office.
The family requests that in-lieu-of flowers donations be made to the Building Fund of Gray United Methodist Church, 2108 Oak St., Johnson City, TN 37615; or the Dawn of Hope, P.O. Box 30, Johnson City, TN 37605.
