Sue Etta Light, a “Woman of Grace,” age 79, died Sunday, September 25, 2011, at Appalachian Christian Village, where she was long a beloved and well cared for resident.
Mrs. Light was born to Essa Frances Claybrooke Gaines and Samuel Harrison Gaines at the family home in the farming community of Smith Mills, Kentucky. She was preceded in death by her older siblings: Miller Gaines and Ruth O’Daniel, of Evansville, Ind., and Sammie Taub, of Johnson City, TN.
She is survived by four nieces, one nephew and numerous grand nieces and grand nephews.
She was married to Marcel Light, who was a hairdresser trained in Paris. She and her husband owned and operated a successful beauty salon in Evansville, Ind., for many years. She was widowed almost thirty years ago.
She moved to Johnson City to live with her sister and brother-in-law, Sammie and Paul Taub. She assisted in the care of Paul who was an invalid with Parkinson’s Disease. She also aided her niece, Susan Taub, in the raising of Susan’s daughter, Talayna Fortunato.
Sue Etta was in assisted living or nursing home care for almost a decade. During that time, her siblings and most of her friends died.
Burial was private. She was buried next to her sister in Monte Vista Cemetery.
Mrs. Light was a gentle and kind soul who loved God. She greatly enjoyed cats, dogs, chocolate, and sparkly jewelry. People who remember her should pet a dog or cat, eat chocolate, take joy in life and help others.
