Cleo Patria Ray Coone, Summerville, S.C.

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. — Mrs. Coone entered into eternal rest Thursday, September 8, 2011, following an extended and valiant battle with Alzheimer’s.
Mrs. Coone was an active member of Thankful Baptist Church and her community well into her 80s. She retired from East Tennessee State University after over 20 years of service. She was also a former employee of First Tennessee Bank.
Her greatest joy was to serve others and she did so in various capacities, volunteering as a foster grandparent at South Side Elementary, serving as a foster parent, volunteering at the Senior center, encouraging young people, caring for the sick and bereaved. She was a member of numerous civic and religious organizations serving in positions of leadership in most of these. She served tirelessly and with dignity at every opportunity.
Gardening and cooking were two of her favorite pastimes. She was known for her beautiful flowers and her superb culinary skills. She always enjoyed cooking for and entertaining guests.
Mrs. Coone was preceded in death by her parents, Avery and Ida Ray; husband, Paul E Coone; son, Paul L. Coone; three sisters, Irene McDowell, Ioma Smith and Edith Ervin Young; and one brother, Albert Ray.
She leaves to mourn her passing, a daughter, Sherry Roberts (Michael), of the home; daughter in law, Shirley Handy (Paul L.); six grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 12:30 PM Wednesday, September 14, 2011, at the Thankful Baptist Church, 1501 East Watauga Ave. with Rev. Vincent Dial officiating.
Burial to follow at the V.A. National Cemetery, Mountain Home.
The family will receive friends from 7 PM to 8 PM Tuesday at Birchette Mortuary “Chapel of Love.”
