Virlet Tipton, Waxhaw, N.C.

WAXHAW, N.C. — Mrs. Virlet “Mudgy” Purkey Tipton, 90, died peacefully at her home with loved ones and friends at her bedside.
There will be a service to celebrate her life at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 27, 2011, in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Home, Weddington Chapel, with Ronnie Sullivan officiating.
The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
The interment will be at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, August 28, 2011, at Monte Vista Memorial Park, Johnson City, TN.
Virlet was born January 10, 1921, in Wise, VA, a daughter of the late Worley B. Purkey and the late Minnie Bell Bolling Purkey. As a homemaker, she enjoyed volunteering for many years at Charlotte Memorial Hospital, now Carolinas Medical Center, as well as playing bridge and golf.
She and her late husband were long-time residents of Johnson City, TN, where she was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church and they moved to Mooresville to be near their family.
Surviving are her children, Kaye Bridgers and husband, Henry, and Roger Tipton and wife, Frances “Frankie,” both of Mooresville, and Gayle Tipton Hall and her partner, Lynita Sikes, of Waxhaw; her grandsons, Rick Cammer and wife, Anne, of Waxhaw, Jonathon Tipton and wife, Jamie, of Midland, and Brad Bridgers and wife, Melissa, of New York, NY; her great-grandchildren, Ethan, Kaley, Bailey, Jaden, Jessie, Calum and Maren; her nieces and nephews and their families; and family friend and care-giver, Linda Lewis, of the home. She was also the Special Mudgy of JD and Gracie Lewis.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, A. Roger Tipton and her brother and sisters, Glenn Purkey, Nell Salyer and Mavis Scott.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Phillip Hess, Katie Barton and the staff of Hospice of Charlotte for the care provided for her for the past year.
