Mildred Cannon, Johnson City

Mrs. Mildred W. Cannon, age 94, Johnson City, passed away Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at Franklin Woods Community Hospital.
Mrs. Cannon was born in Erwin, TN and grew up in Red Hill, NC, and later lived in the Washington College Community until 2005. She was a daughter of the late Russell & Minnie Garland Woody. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cannon was also preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Newton Cannon, two brothers, J.H. Woody and Russell Woody.
She was a member of Salem Presbyterian Church. She was a “prayer warrior” and prayed for her family every day.
Mrs. Cannon graduated from Lees McRae College and Asheville Teachers College. Her 1st teaching position was in a one room schoolhouse in Beans Creek, N.C. and taught in Mitchell County N.C. for 8 years.
She was a huge sports fan, especially NASCAR.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy C. & Roy Gale Hensley, Jonesborough; one brother, Birt Shelby Woody, Johnson City; one sister, Katherine Sparks, Clemmons, NC; several nieces and a nephew; and a grand-dog, “Elsa.”
The family would like to thank Dr. Denise Sibley and staff, who she loved. Also, Thanks to Colonial Hill Retirement Center, and the staff of NHC Healthcare of Johnson City, for their wonderful care.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 19, 2011 at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Roy Yelton officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Friday prior to the service. Interment services will follow at Monte Vista Burial Park.
Pallbearers will be family & friends.
