Arthur E. Hougland, 76, passed away on Wednesday, August 10, 2011, at his residence.
Born in Omaha, Nebraska, he was the son of the late Arthur J. and Marie Perkins Hougland.
Dr. Hougland, a colonel in the US Army Reserve, served 36 yrs, mostly in the Surgical Research Unit at Ft. Sam Houston, TX. He retired in 1998 as professor emeritus at East Tennessee State University, College of Public and Allied Health, after 25 years of service.
He was a graduate of the University of Iowa and Brigham Young University, and received his Ph.D. from the University of South Dakota.
He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Mesa, AZ, and Holy Trinity Worship Community in Jonesborough.
Dr. Hougland and his wife, Margaret Webb Hougland, recently celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Survivors also include a daughter: Amy H. (Walter) Floyd, Sacramento, CA; sons: Jon Hougland, Portland, OR, Kriss Hougland, Huntsville, AL; grandchildren: Matthew Floyd and Lindsay Floyd.
A Celebration of Life service for Dr. Hougland will be held at 4 PM on Sunday, August 14, 2011, in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services with Dr. Dennis Hamm officiating.
The family will greet friends from 2 PM until time of the service.
A graveside and committal service will be held on Monday, Aug. 15, at 2:00 PM in Mountain Home National Cemetery. Full military honors will be provided by Boone Dam VFW Post #4933. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Drs. Rebecca Copeland, Stephen Loyd and Jay Mehta for their excellent care.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Arthur and Margaret Hougland Scholarship Endowment, ETSU Foundation, PO Box 70721, Johnson City TN 37614.
