Virginia Riggs, Johnson City

Virginia Murray Riggs, 89, of Johnson City, TN, passed away in the early morning hours of Friday, July 29, 2011, at Christian Care Center (Johnson City, TN).
Ms. Riggs was born January 5, 1922, the daughter of the late John Anderson Murray and Grace Elizabeth Milhorn Murray. Born and raised in Johnson City, TN, she lived most of her life in the local area. Upon her marriage to William H. Riggs, she was blessed with the opportunity to travel to and reside in many different U.S. states and foreign countries.
Ms. Riggs was a graduate of Science Hill High School (Johnson City, TN) and attended the College of William & Mary (Williamsburg, VA).
Ms. Riggs was a retiree of the United States Department of Defense Language Institute in San Antonio, Texas. She had received many prestigious awards and recognitions from foreign governments for her work as a language instructor.
Ms. Riggs was of the Christian faith.
Ms. Riggs was very well-known for always providing her family with beautifully decorated homes and unforgettable home-cooked meals.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her former husband, William H. Riggs; a brother, William Howard Murray; and a sister, Charolette Elizabeth Murray.
Survivors of Virginia Murray Riggs include two daughters, Jennifer Santilli and husband, Stan (Johnson City, TN), and Elizabeth Wiseley and husband, David (San Antonio, TX); a sister, Merita Hillebrand and husband, George (Jacksonville, NC); four grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Virginia Murray Riggs will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 3, 2011, at Monte Vista Memorial Gardens (1900 E. Oakland Avenue, Johnson City, TN). Chaplain Dwight MacPherson will be officiating.
Inurnment of Ms. Riggs’ cremains will take place following the conclusion of the memorial service.
